Tri-County Library's Story

Tri-County Library's Story

Tri-County Library first opened its doors on April 30, 1991, in a small rear room at Mabank Bank. With Billie McKee appointed as the first library director, the library quickly became a gathering place for the Mabank community.  A formal opening was held on August 17, 1991, serving a population of just 1,680.

Over the years, the library has grown alongside the community, we moved to our current location at 132 E Market Street in Mabank a few years later. Under the leadership of directors Claire Stout, Brandi Marrett, and now Melissa Newland, Tri-County Library has continued to expand its reach and adapt to changing needs.  Today we serve a population of 6,396 across Henderson, Kaufman, and Van Zandt counties--a growth of nearly 280% since our founding.

What began as a single-room library has transformed into a vital hub for learning, creativity, and connection.  We provide access to books, technology, and educational programs that enrich lives in our rural community.  From children's story hours and teen activities to 3D printing, job search resources, and homebound delivery, Tri-County Library remains committed to serving every stage of life.

As a small library with a big mission, we are proud of our history and excited for our future. For more than 30 years, Tri-County Library has proven that even in the most modest of spaces, knowledge, imagination, and community can flourish.
